Warmer days are here at last, and although we’re still well in the midst of spring, these sun-soaked breezes may have some of us thinking of summer. Whether you’re planning to lace up those running shoes or you’re dreaming of powder-white sands, it’s not too early to start setting some summer fitness goals. Integrating your indoor and outdoor fitness routines can ensure you have every opportunity to meet and exceed your goals.
Here are just a few tips to help you hit the ground running–and keep you on track throughout the season!
Learning from history
While it may be tempting to reach for the stars when setting your summer sights, a lofty goal won’t mean much if you can’t meet it. Consider any previous fitness goals you may have set for yourself–keeping these in mind may be helpful when making plans for the future. Were you able to reach your intended target? A new goal built on a past success may spur you to go even further this time. Fell short of your aims? Take a moment to reflect on why. Perhaps you may wish to adjust for your current fitness level, break a large goal into smaller steps, or adapt a strenuous schedule to better fit your needs. (Worth noting: a home gym is great for all of these!)
An eye to the future
Just as important as looking to the past is setting a future target that will keep you motivated. A burst of initial enthusiasm might keep you going for those first few days, but after that, you’ll want something bigger to set your sights on. For example, you might tie your goal to a specific event, such as a community cycling race or a 5K for your favorite charity. By committing to an event that you’re excited about, you’ll be more eager to take on what challenges may come along the way. Enjoy the ride!
Work smarter, not harder
There’s simply no substitute for summer days spent out of doors – waking up with a brisk morning jog, chasing your best time in the pool, or greeting the day with a sun salutation. Enjoy your outdoor recreation, but don’t forget to use your home gym to its full advantage. When rainy days or rising temperatures threaten your routine, consider ways that your home equipment can supplement for your usual activity. High quality treadmills, stationary bikes, and ellipticals can help you to meet your cardio goals, while free weights and rowing machines are great for at-home strength training. Even when skies are clear, you might find that a climate-controlled workout is worth staying in for!
